100: The Best of the First 100, Part 1

Well, we made it to 100 episodes of this lil’ podcast!

To celebrate, we’ve asked the hosts of our Denver and San Diego shows to share some of their favorite stories. This week we’ll present a couple of stories selected by Ron Doyle and Erin Rollman, the co-hosts of The Narrators Denver.

Ron Doyle chose a story by Emma Weisfeld that she shared at our “Siblings” show in December 2015, and Erin Rollman chose a story by Timmi Lasley that she shared at our “Crushed” show in August 2015.

Thank you for continuing to support the podcast and for coming out in droves every month to our live shows. We are still so in love with the power of the community that this show has built and we look forward to sharing another 100 episodes with you.

Our June shows, in which we will explore the theme “Ink,” are incredibly nigh, so mark your calendars:

Tuesday, June 14th in San Diego at Tiger! Tiger! Tavern, 8PM. FREE

Wednesday, June 15th in Denver at Buntport Theater, 8PM. FREE

    The storytellers:

timmi-lasleyTimmi Lasley is the host of Epilogue Comedy — a showcase in a punk rock book store. she was the winner of Comedy Works Funny Final Four competition in 2015, which gave her the opportunity to share the stage co-hosting at Comedy Works with Dave Chappelle. Festival credits include: High Plains Comedy Fest 2013, ’14 and ’15; Underground Music Showcase and CROM Fest 2015. She has become an accomplished storyteller and can be seen hosting Denver’s Moth Story Slam, or writing and producing original plays.
greg-salvesen2Greg Salvesen is a perpetual astronomy graduate student studying black holes at the University of Colorado Boulder.  He’s applying for real jobs right now, but has never had one before.  Greg also enjoys running long distance races, particularly those of 100 miles or more.  He was the winner—and only finisher—of the first ever Infinitus 888, a 10-day, 551-mile footrace in Vermont. Oh, he likes jigsaw puzzles, too, but who doesn’t?
janae-burrisJanae Burris is a comedian, writer and actor as well as a graduate of California Institute of the Arts, School of Theater. While in Los Angeles Janae performed in dozens of stage plays and  was a member of the critically acclaimed City Garage Theater. She has performed and taught improv and stand up comedy for almost a decade, but in the last eighteen months has become a staple in the densely talented Denver comedy community. Janae grabbed the runner up spot at the 2015 Comedy Works New Faces Contest. Her recent promotion to “Regular” at CW has given her the opportunity to open and feature for some of the nation’s funniest comedians including Ben Roy, Josh Blue and The Sklar Brothers. Janae can be seen weekly performing at both Comedy Works Denver locations and throughout the front range. Follow her on Twitter and Instagram @negativenegro.
kevin-klingKevin Kling is best known for his popular commentaries on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered and his storytelling stage shows like Tales from the Charred Underbelly of the Yule Log. Kling’s autobiographical tales are as enchanting as they are true to life: hopping freight trains, getting hit by lightning, performing his banned play in Czechoslovakia, growing up in Minnesota, and eating things before knowing what they are. He continues to write plays and stories in a rigorous fashion, and travels around the globe to numerous storytelling festivals, residencies, and has been invited to perform the acclaimed National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN for several years. Kevin has released a number of compact disc collections of his stories and has published three books, The Dog Says How, Holiday Inn and Big Little Brother.

Today’s podcast is dedicated to all of you out there in podcast land who have never attended a live show before. Our August event was so fantastic that we’re playing it here for you in its entirety, raw and mostly uncut—this is as close to the real thing as you can get. You’re going to hear stories from Erin Rollman, Dan St. Germain, Christie Buchele, Bob Meddles, Haley Driscoll, Timmi Lasley, Sam Tallent, Janae Burris, Kristin Rand, and Josh Blue. These stories were recorded live on August 19 2015 at Buntport Theater as part of an all-comedian special in honor of High Plains Comedy Festival. The theme of the evening was Crushed.

These stories were recorded live on 19 August 2015 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado as part of an all-comedian special in honor of High Plains Comedy Festival. The theme of the evening was “Crushed.” Our theme music is by our friend Whalehawk (aka the Grammy-nominated musician Jake Sanders).

The last couple of months have been really big for The Narrators and I just wanted to say thanks to all of you, our loyal podcast listeners, especially those of you who don’t live in Denver or San Diego, who’ve endured our constant plugs for shows you can’t attend. If you’re one of those folks who listens to this podcast but has never seen the live show, we want to know you! Please say hello on Facebook, Twitter, or email us.

I also want to say thanks to all of you who do come to the monthly events and show your support by throwing cash in the donation jar. Your generosity in Denver has allowed us to start paying our performers, which is huge. If you’re looking for other ways to help this show and what we do, please support our sponsors and tell them we sent you. Also, please consider giving this podcast a rating on iTunes. It takes less than one minute and really does make a huge difference in the world of podcasting.

Our next live events will be on October 13 in San Diego and October 21 in Denver. The theme will be “Creeps.” The San Diego show is still looking for a few more storytellers, so please email Robert and Mary if you’re interested. You can send them a message via our Facebook page or email them at sandiego@thenarrators.org.

    This Wednesday: “Crushed”

    BUNTPORT, 19 AUGUST 2015 at 8:00PM:

Her first real job was operating a trash compactor at an orange soda factory. He fell in love with a boy who was trampled by the bulls in Pamplona. She lost in the second-to-last round of a spelling bee—and the word was “contriturate.” Or something like that. You get the idea. In honor of High Plains Comedy Festival, please join us for a very special comedians-only evening of true stories on the theme “Crushed.” We have assembled a massive lineup of crush-capable and crush-worthy comedians for you:

    Josh Blue (Last Comic Standing)
    Christie Buchele (Empty Girlfriend)
    Janae Burris (Buddy Buddy!)
    Haley Driscoll (Empty Girlfriend)
    Timmi Lasley (Epilogue Comedy)
    Bob Meddles (Comedy Works)
    Kristin Rand (Everybody’s Great!)
    Dan St. Germain (Comedy Central)
    Sam Tallent (Fine Gentlemen’s Club)

…and your host, Erin Rollman, pulverizing the comedians’ sense of rhythm with long hugs instead of handshakes after every introduction. We’ll have beer and wine available for donation (CASH ONLY). See you there!

    DENVER

FAIR WARNING: This will be a very crowded show and seating may be more limited than usual. We’ll have pillows available, but please arrive early if you want to sit in a chair!
