  • 222: Greg Salvesen, “This Is Not a Library”

Greg decides to spice things up on a boring visit to his grandfather’s house

Your next storyteller is Greg Salvesen. With an anniversary coming up soon, we’re feeling a little nostalgic—so today we’re sharing this story from all the way back in 2013. Greg is an astronomer, ultra-marathon runner, and long-time favorite of the show who now lives and works in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He shared this story in front of a live audience at the Deer Pile in Denver, Colorado; the theme of the show was “The Fall.”

Special thanks to Beau Beverage for today’s outro music.

103: Greg Salvesen, “Confidently Lying to My Barber”

All of the stories shared at The Narrators are true, or at least they’re supposed to be true, so it’s rare for one of our storytellers to reveal when they are lying. Today’s story, however, is almost entirely about lying—in this case, to total strangers. Greg Salvesen is an astronomer, ultra-distance runner, and a long-time friend of the show. His story was recorded live on 20 July 2016 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado. The theme of the evening was “Pop!”

Thanks to everyone who attended our all-comedian special at High Plains Comedy Festival—we were honored to be part of the fest. You have two chances to catch one of our live shows this month: 13 September at Tiger!Tiger! Tavern in San Diego and 21 September at Buntport Theater in Denver. The theme will be “Change of Heart,” both shows start at 8pm, and both shows are totally free. Hope to see you there!

If you haven’t already, please like our page on Facebook for the most up-to-date information on all of these events and more.

timmi-lasleyTimmi Lasley is the host of Epilogue Comedy — a showcase in a punk rock book store. she was the winner of Comedy Works Funny Final Four competition in 2015, which gave her the opportunity to share the stage co-hosting at Comedy Works with Dave Chappelle. Festival credits include: High Plains Comedy Fest 2013, ’14 and ’15; Underground Music Showcase and CROM Fest 2015. She has become an accomplished storyteller and can be seen hosting Denver’s Moth Story Slam, or writing and producing original plays.
greg-salvesen2Greg Salvesen is a perpetual astronomy graduate student studying black holes at the University of Colorado Boulder.  He’s applying for real jobs right now, but has never had one before.  Greg also enjoys running long distance races, particularly those of 100 miles or more.  He was the winner—and only finisher—of the first ever Infinitus 888, a 10-day, 551-mile footrace in Vermont. Oh, he likes jigsaw puzzles, too, but who doesn’t?
janae-burrisJanae Burris is a comedian, writer and actor as well as a graduate of California Institute of the Arts, School of Theater. While in Los Angeles Janae performed in dozens of stage plays and  was a member of the critically acclaimed City Garage Theater. She has performed and taught improv and stand up comedy for almost a decade, but in the last eighteen months has become a staple in the densely talented Denver comedy community. Janae grabbed the runner up spot at the 2015 Comedy Works New Faces Contest. Her recent promotion to “Regular” at CW has given her the opportunity to open and feature for some of the nation’s funniest comedians including Ben Roy, Josh Blue and The Sklar Brothers. Janae can be seen weekly performing at both Comedy Works Denver locations and throughout the front range. Follow her on Twitter and Instagram @negativenegro.
kevin-klingKevin Kling is best known for his popular commentaries on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered and his storytelling stage shows like Tales from the Charred Underbelly of the Yule Log. Kling’s autobiographical tales are as enchanting as they are true to life: hopping freight trains, getting hit by lightning, performing his banned play in Czechoslovakia, growing up in Minnesota, and eating things before knowing what they are. He continues to write plays and stories in a rigorous fashion, and travels around the globe to numerous storytelling festivals, residencies, and has been invited to perform the acclaimed National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN for several years. Kevin has released a number of compact disc collections of his stories and has published three books, The Dog Says How, Holiday Inn and Big Little Brother.

    BUNTPORT, 15 JULY 2015 at 8:00PM:

  • 66: Greg Salvesen, “One Mile to Go”

66: Greg Salvesen, “One Mile to Go”

The theme of our live show in June 2013 was “Insults & Grievances.” Folks packed into the Deer Pile—that tiny, gorgeous, sweltering box—listened to their peers tell tales of live beating them down. The story I remember the most vividly from that night came from Greg Salvesen, an economist who loves to run long distances. Back then, Greg recounted his greatest loss, and the damage that it did to him.

I’m sharing that story with you today because it’s a good prequel to Greg’s next story, which he will be sharing next week on July 15 at our monthly Denver show. A little more than a month ago, Greg competed in the granddaddy of all long jogs—the Infinitus, a rugged 888km footrace in the wilds of Vermont. That’s right, 888km, over 550 miles in a figure-eight loop. Against all odds, Greg won! Join us at Buntport Theater on Wednesday, 15 July at 8:00pm to hear Greg Salvensen share his new story, along with six other stories on the theme “Take a Hike.”

Bonus: Here’s the 46-second promotional video for the Infinitus, which is easily the weirdest, most unsettling video for a running race that I’ve ever seen:

This story was originally recorded on 18 June 2013 at the Deer Pile in Denver, Colorado and the theme of the evening was “Arguments & Grievances.” Our theme music is by our friend Whalehawk (aka the Grammy-nominated musician Jake Sanders).

  • 32: The Fall, Part 2

    32: The Fall, Part 2

Part two of our hard-hitting expose on “The Fall” features stories by Buntport Theater‘s Brian Colonna and ultra-runner Greg Salvesen.  These stories were recorded at The Deer Pile on November 21st, 2013 by our good friends at The Denver Diatribe.

The intro and outro music was produced and graciously provided by Sans Seruf, and you can find more slick beats for your earholes over at his bandcamp page.

Our next show is coming up on December 19th and the theme will be “Toys.”

The Narrators are working with Off-Center at the Jones Theater on a show called Lived/Re-lived that will go into full production in March 2014.  Even though that is waaaaayyyy into the future, tickets are now on sale. Snatch ’em up.

    Thanks for listening!
