200: Season 3 Finale – A Tribute to Sydney Crain

Episode 200: Today we’re going to do something a little different—to celebrate reaching 200 episodes, we’re paying tribute to one of the people who has made all of this possible, our producer, Sydney Crain. Ron sat down with Sydney just before our live show last week, during the middle of a huge rainstorm, to ask about her favorite stories and memories from her time with the show.

In this episode, you’ll hear clips of stories from Janae Burris, Ellen K. Graham, and Steven Burge, plus a full story told by Sydney at our “Framed” show in June 2019.

Sydney also sang our outro music for this episode—it’s a clip from our special “Cover Story” show at the Underground Music Showcase earlier this summer, with Jobless on backup.

The Narrators podcast is going to take a break for the rest of 2019, so this is a great time to go digging in our archives—and as of right now, we can now say there are literally hundreds of episodes available, so go ahead, binge to your heart’s content!

68: Ellen K. Graham, “Pilgrims of the Interstate”

Back in April, The Narrators collaborated with the Musica Sacra, a 35-piece chamber orchestra here in Denver. They gave us three pieces of music and asked our storytellers to write something inspired by the music. In exchange, we gave them three stories and they chose three pieces of music to accompany them. We wrote and edited and memorized and rehearsed and revised and then rehearsed some more… paragraphs were shifted out of their natural order to work with the music, and the orchestral arrangements were shuffled and modified to jive with the beats of the story. It was a dramatic departure from our usual low-key routine. The end result was beautiful, watching our storytellers transform their personal experiences into these sweeping, powerful performances.

This week’s story comes from that show. Ellen K. Graham is a playwright and long-time favorite of The Narrators. Her story was paired Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “The Lark Ascending,” which for copyright reasons we do not play in its entirety. This story was originally recorded at Augustana Arts on 24 April 2015. The theme of the evening was “Two-Way Street.”

Our theme music is by our friend Whalehawk (aka the Grammy-nominated musician Jake Sanders).

  • The Narrators with a Full Freaking Chamber Orchestra.

MSCO-Narrators-2015-poster1If you are one of the millions of people who have attended one of our shows and thought “I like this story, but it sure would be embettered if it had a 35-piece chamber orchestra providing some sweet orchestral jams to jack it up some,” you are in luck.

Our next big collaboration is just a couple of weeks away, and tickets are on sale now to see The Narrators perform with the Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra in a show called Two-Way Street. MSCO and The Narrators traded music and stories, respectively, for each group of performers to respond to and the result will be an evening of true stories and majestic orchestral soundtracking!

There are two chances to see Two-Way Street: Friday April 24th 7:30pm at Augustana Lutheran Church, and Saturday April 25th 8:00pm at the McNichols Civic Center Building as part of the Denver Music Summit. As a side note, if you are a musician or support the music scene in Denver, you should really check out ALL of the amazing programming that the Denver Music Summit is providing that weekend. We are proud to be partnering with them for a second year in a row, and we are THRILLED to be collaborating with the Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra.
