Welp, the protean, heretofore single-celled organism that was The Narrators has split, and is now a two-celled dynamo, spanning two states and spreading true stories to the Western United States. On Tuesday, September 8th, The Narrators San Diego will host its first show at Tiger! Tiger! Tavern at 8pm. We’ve twisted the arms of a handful of folks here in SD to help kick off the show, and we are excited to present our lineup:
Aaryn Belfer (Columinst – San Diego City Beat)
Wendy Smith (Professor of English – San Diego Mesa College)
Tony Allard (Performance Artist, Writer)
Laura Condi (Writer, Comedian)
Lisa Hemminger (Writer)
Your faithful and eager hosts Mary Robertson and Robert Rutherford will be present to share stories of their own and wring their hands and sweat copious amounts all while laughing nervously and pretending like everything is totally fine.
We expect to fill up the back patio at Tiger! Tiger!, so show up early for a seat. As always, The Narrators is FREE and ALL AGES. See you tomorrow night, San Diego!
We have an exciting announcement to share with you!
We have found a Southern California home for The Narrators. Starting September 8, The Narrators San Diego will take place the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Tiger!Tiger! Tavern on beautiful El Cajon Boulevard at 8pm. As always, The Narrators is a free event.
If you are reading this and thinking to yourself “WTF is a The Narrators?”, please take a moment to click around up that top header, specifically the ABOUT page, which will fill you in on what exactly it is that we do, and then maybe wander on over to the Home page and fill your ears with the sweet sounds of storytelling (maybe even subscribe to the podcast!). Then, if you have stamina and a clear heart, make a dash for the FAQ page and find out how you can get involved. Then pat yourself on the back and pour a glass of chocolate milk to celebrate, because you will have become an expert on The Narrators.
But I digress. We are honored to be working with the good people at Tiger!Tiger!, who also operate the Blind Lady Ale House in Normal Heights and Panama 66 at the San Diego Art Museum in Balboa Park. Aside from their fantastic craft beers and delicious food, these establishments serve as important community centers hosting local music, films, game nights, poetry readings, and now storytelling.
If you live in San Diego and would like to be part of the Narrators, please join us the 2nd Tuesday of every month at Tiger!Tiger! starting this September. If you don’t live in San Diego, please spread the word to your SoCal friends and family.
Mary Robertson and Robert Rutherford settled into Southern Californian living and are ready to hear your stories!
Most importantly, we’re looking for storytellers! We’re looking for people to tell 5-10 minute true stories based on a changing monthly theme. September’s theme is “Firsts”. You do not need to be a professional writer or performer to participate. We love writers, actors, comedians, musicians and other people who identify as artists, but we especially encourage those of you who do not normally do this kind of thing to get involved.
The Narrators is committed to representing multiple voices and experiences and creating a safer space for all of us to be ourselves. We very much want to hear from people of color, queer people, people living with disabilities, immigrants to the U.S., military veterans, the very old and the very young—you get the idea. You can get in touch through our website, on our Facebook page, or email robert@thenarrators.org.
Well, you did it, you lovely beasts. You helped us raise $1200 in just 7 short days to help us grow and expand The Narrators’ live show and our podcast. Thank you so much to those who helped spread the word and especially our supporters who dug deep and made short work of our campaign. We are so excited about what lies ahead for our show and we know that we couldn’t do it without our storytellers or our audience. Thank you.
Speaking of exciting things in our future, we are hosting a special Narrators show on Friday July 18th at Buntport Theater. We are forgoing our regular third Wednesday show so that we can focus on making this show one of the best we’ve done. It’s also Robert’s last show before packing up his new podcasting gear and heading west to spread The Narrators’ all over SoCal like so much avocado on gluten-free breads.
We have teamed up with Pivot TV and Rooftop Media to put together a show about “Taking a Stand”, which will be filmed by Pivot TV. We are pleased to announce the lineup for the show, which includes the following badasses:
Nancy Norton (comedian, former member of Vox Feminista)
Andrew Orvedahl (comedian, creator of The Narrators)
Robert Rutherford (co-host of The Narrators, poet, musician)
The show is at 8pm and whereas we are not charging admission, there is a suggested donation of $3 so that we can give our storytellers some scratch.
And if that ain’t enough excitement for you, the second episode of our storytelling series on Colorado Public Radio, The Narrators’ Second Listen, is available for your perusal and guaranteed enjoyment. In this episode we explore the resume as a narrative device.
Mark yer calendars and we’ll see you on July 18th!
If you haven’t heard the news, The Narrators is expanding! Robert is moving to California, and is planning on setting up a Narrators outpost as soon as he gets there. To help him get what he needs to record live shows and add to our growing podcast, we have launched “The Narrators Westward Expansion” fundraiser. Please head over to our GoFundMe campaign site for more details.
