128: Taylor Gonda, “Oops, I Flirted Again”

Today’s story comes from one of The Narrators’ favorite storytellers, Taylor Gonda. Taylor is a podcast host, DJ, Denver icon and, sadly for all of us in Colorado, a soon-to-be resident of Los Angeles. California, please take care of our good friend. Taylor’s story of awkward infatuation was recorded live on 17 May 2017 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado. The theme of the evening was “Fashion Victim.”

Side note: During Taylor’s story, she shows a photo to the audience—and here it is:

Our next shows will take place Tuesday, 13 June at the Tiger! Tiger! Tavern in San Diego and Wednesday, 21 June at the Buntport Theater in Denver. The theme will be “Road Trip.”

The show is as free as borrowing a skirt from your best friend’s closet. Stylish Renegade beer and utilitarian wine available by donation.

88: Taylor Gonda, “An Anglophile’s First Visit to England”

So far, 2016 has been rough year for anglophiles. We’ve lost Lemmy and David Bowie and Alan Rickman already, and it’s not even February. The outpouring of grief and nostalgia and admiration over the last few weeks has been overwhelming but still inspiring—it’s clear that England still has an immense influence on American culture.

When news of David Bowie’s death hit social media, this week’s storyteller, Taylor Gonda, was the first person who came to mind. People were reaching out to her on Facebook as if Bowie were a biological uncle, and with good reason—time and time again, Taylor has proven her love for all things living in the shadow of the Union Jack. She’s a long-time favorite of The Narrators—but you may know her best as co-host of These Things Matter, the greatest pop culture podcast in all the land. Taylor’s story was recorded on 17 September 2014 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado. The theme of the evening was “Schooled.”

Our next live event will take place on 20 January 2016 at Buntport Theater in Denver—the theme will be “Promise.” The show is free and starts at 8pm. We’re also hosting a miniature version of our show for Untitled at the Denver Art Museum on 29 January. We’ll be in the Danny Singer exhibit at 8pm, telling stories about “Family Vacation.” For a list of all our 2016 themes and information about other upcoming special events, please visit our Events page.

41: GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS! Part 2

Part two of our “Girls! Girls! Girls!” show features stories from musician/educator/storyteller Julia Wilson and Taylor Gonda, co-host of the award-winning pop culture podcast These Things Matter. These stories were recorded at The Deer Pile on April 17, 2014 by our main man Ron Doyle.

IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD THE BIG NEWS REGARDING OUR SHOW, READ ON! Our May show at our new home at Buntport Theater (717 Lipan St.) will take place on Wednesday the 21st and our theme will be “Moving.” Our monthly shows will now take place on the third Wednesday of every month at Buntport, which is large enough to accommodate our growing audience. The show will still be free and we’ll still have beer and wine available for a suggested donation.

You might notice that our podcast sounds a little bit different! We got some new tunes, provided by our friend WhaleHawk (aka grammy nominated musician Jake Sanders). He has a huge catalog of music available on his SoundCloud page, so make sure to check out more of his work.

  • TONIGHT!! The Narrators on GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS!

    Normals and Weirdos –

Tonight we celebrate the end of our run at the Deer Pile with one last show at the venue that helped us in no small way to become what we are today!  Or theme is Girls! Girls! Girls! and we’ve assembled a lineup of some of The Narrators’ best storytellers, peppered with a few newcomers.  Here are the details:

Jefferson Bare is the curator and host of Bare!, monthly in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. A sex educator and writer, Jefferson keeps a pseudonymous blog, One Life, Take Two, that details his life as a parent and pervert. He is a storyteller frequently seen on stages around New York and elsewhere, including The Moth, where he is a StorySlam winner. He is also host of Foreplay! A Sexy Storytelling Open Mic, biweekly in New York.

Edwin Forrest Ward is a cornerstone of the Denver literary scene, and is also the host of Stories Stories Bring Your Stories, our sister Denver storytelling show at the Mercury Cafe’. Stories Stories Bring your Stories happens the fourth Tuesday of every month.

Taylor Gonda is a longtime contributor to The Narrators and co-host of award-winning podcast These Things Matter, where she and co-host Kevin O’Brien ply the depths of our pop-cultural obsessions.

Julia Wilson sings in several Denver-based jazz, blues, and soul groups, including Westbrook Jazz, which started in Detroit in the 1960s.

Cory Casciato is nerd royalty in Denver.  He is a former editor of the Onion AV Club, a current writer for Westword, and creator of undead-obsessed website The Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse.

Francie Swidler is a contributor to Mile High Style for The Denver Post and Geeks Who Drink quizmaster.

Ian O’Dougherty has been playing in Denver bands for over twenty years, and has a long resume that includes tenures in some amazing bands, including Uphollow, The Ian Cooke Band, TaunTaun, and more.  Ian is also a strong advocate for arts in Denver and is currently co-producing a series of full-album cover shows called Under the Cover.

Ru Johnson is a writer, arts advocate and nail polish enthusiast. Ru writes for a metric shit-ton of media outlets.  JFGI and see how she owns this town.

8PM at THE DEER PILE.  FREE AS THE AIR YOU BREATHE, UNLESS YOU’RE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO BUYS THOSE AEROSOL CANS OF AIR TO BREATHE, IN WHICH CASE WE’D LIKE TO CHARGE YOU 10 BUCKS.  See you there, darlings.

  • 29: Two Sides to Every Story Part 1

29: Two Sides to Every Story Part 1

The theme for our October show, “Two Sides to Every Story”, provided an opportunity for a little bit of experimentation.  We thought it might be fun to explore the nature of truth in true storytelling by looking at an age old adage, that there are two sides to every story. We invited pairs of storytellers to tell their versions of a shared experience or story. We were hoping to dig into what makes a story a story, what we can learn by looking in between the gaps, etc.  We sequestered the storytellers while their counterparts were telling their version, so that what the audience got was free from influence.  It was pretty danged cool. Part 1 of the show features true stories from podcaster, producer, and gadabout Taylor Gonda (whose podcast These Things Matter is essential listening for pop culture nerds) and writer Josiah Hesse. These stories were recorded at The Deer Pile on October 17th, 2013 by our good friends at The Denver Diatribe.

The intro and outro music was produced and graciously provided by Sans Seruf, and you can find more slick beats for your earholes over at his bandcamp page.

Our next show is coming up on November 21st and the theme will be “The Fall.”

AND!!!  The Narrators is working with the Denver Music Summit on a Very Special Episode that will take place on Saturday, November 23rd at the McNichols Building in Denver featuring musicians from near and far telling Stories from the Road.  More information on the lineup and tickets can be found here.

ALSO!!! The Narrators are working with Off-Center at the Jones Theater on a show called Lived/Re-lived that will go into full production in March 2014.  Even though that is waaaaayyyy into the future, tickets are now on sale. Snatch ’em up.

    Thanks for listening!
