130: Karak Miakol, “I am alive, on Earth”

Today’s story comes from our recent all-refugee special. Karak Miakol, a women’s rights activist and founder of Women Who Grow, shares her story about fighting for an education as a young girl in South Sudan. This story was recorded live on 31 May 2017 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado. The theme of the evening was “Home.”

On top of our regular monthly shows, we are excited to announce that for the first time, The Narrators is going international, visiting México for a very special show at the Huerto community space in Tijuana. This will also be our first bilingual show, with folks telling stories on the theme “Making it Last,” in the language they prefer. Please check our Facebook page for more details and be sure to keep an ear out for stories from that evening on future episodes of the podcast.

BUNTPORT THEATER, DENVER, 31 MAY 2017 at 8:00PM:

The Narrators believes that storytelling has the capacity to cultivate empathy, build stronger connections between our fellow humans, and create communities of understanding. The first step in speaking up for others is letting others speak—and listening to them.

That is why we are so excited to host this special, one-time only event—come hear refugees share true stories on the theme of “Home” and learn about Denver refugee organizations like African Community Center in preparation for World Refugee Day in June.

    Here’s the lineup:

    • Nasteho Abdi
    • Eyni Ali
    • Karak Miakol
    • Absi Miser
    • Alla Rubinstein

    …and more.

$5 suggested donation—but all are welcome. Swanky beer from Renegade Brewing Company and not-swanky wine available by donation.
