75: Wendy Smith, “My First Sex Dream”

We are still reeling with excitement over the success of the first San Diego Narrators show. Thanks to each and every storyteller and all of you who came out to support us.

Today’s featured storyteller, Wendy Smith, a.k.a. Wendyceratops, is a Professor of English at Mesa Community College in San Diego. See her students’ ratemyprofessors.com reviews to get a sense of just how amazing she is:

    “Never boring.”
    “Fair. For the most part.”
    “Really chill.”
    “Always has snacks.”
    “A believer.”
    “Passionate.”
    “Open to different interpretations.”

    And:

    “A must”

    Buuuut:

    She is “provincial”

    And:

“She does have her favorites and I was not one of them but that should
not matter unless you want to go out for a beer with the prof.”

Wendy’s story was recorded live on 8 September 2015 at Tiger!Tiger! Tavern in San Diego, California. The theme of the evening was “Firsts.” Our theme music is by our friend Whalehawk (aka the Grammy-nominated musician Jake Sanders).

He lost his virginity during Barack Obama’s inauguration. Her bedroom walls were plastered with blue ribbons from spelling bees and swim meets. They found old love at a the soft opening of a new movie theater, during a screening “Rambo: First Blood.” Or something like that—you get the idea. Please join us for an evening filled with stories of “Firsts,” told by a lineup of entirely new-to-us narrators:

    Cory Byrom (Risk!, The Iceberg)
Brandon Carter (Futuristic Films, Citizen Pictures)
    Bethany Hernandez (Comedy Works)
    Caroyln Matthews (Molly Brown Ultimate)
Matthew Taylor (Author, Goat Lips: Tales of a Lapsed Englishman)
    Whitmer Thomas (Power Violence)

…and your host, Ron Doyle, standing awkwardly close to the first row of the audience. We’ll have beer and wine available for donation (CASH ONLY). See you there!

74: Robert Rutherford, “The Time Traveler”

The Narrators San Diego debuted just three days ago and we’re over the moon happy for what’s happening there, what it means for this show and this podcast. We’ve been listening to the raw audio of the stories that were told at that first show and dude, it’s so good. Denver, we’re not living in a vacuum anymore—we have competition on the coast.

Today’s story comes from Robert Rutherford. When Robert’s not co-hosting The Narrators San Diego, he works as a museum educator and the digital content developer at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Robert’s story was recorded live on 8 September 2015 at Tiger!Tiger! Tavern in San Diego, California. The theme of the evening was “Firsts.” Our theme music is by our friend Whalehawk (aka the Grammy-nominated musician Jake Sanders).

  • TUESDAY NIGHT! THE NARRATORS SAN DIEGO!

firsts-poster1Welp, the protean, heretofore single-celled organism that was The Narrators has split, and is now a two-celled dynamo, spanning two states and spreading true stories to the Western United States. On Tuesday, September 8th, The Narrators San Diego will host its first show at Tiger! Tiger! Tavern at 8pm. We’ve twisted the arms of a handful of folks here in SD to help kick off the show, and we are excited to present our lineup:

    • Aaryn Belfer (Columinst – San Diego City Beat)
    • Wendy Smith (Professor of English – San Diego Mesa College)
    • Tony Allard (Performance Artist, Writer)
    • Laura Condi (Writer, Comedian)
    • Lisa Hemminger (Writer)

Your faithful and eager hosts Mary Robertson and Robert Rutherford will be present to share stories of their own and wring their hands and sweat copious amounts all while laughing nervously and pretending like everything is totally fine.

We expect to fill up the back patio at Tiger! Tiger!, so show up early for a seat. As always, The Narrators is FREE and ALL AGES. See you tomorrow night, San Diego!

  • 73: Erin Rollman, “Casa Bonita: Chicken or Beef?”

DON’T FORGET: Our next live event is the debut of The Narrators San Diego on 8 September 2015 at Tiger!Tiger! Tavern in North Park, San Diego. We have assembled a bright constellation of storytellers to guide us on our maiden voyage. We hope you will join us! The show is FREE and starts at 8pm.

This week’s story comes from Erin Rollman. She is the co-host of The Narrators Denver, a founding member and co-owner of Buntport Theater, a long-time favorite storyteller, and an award-winning actor and playwright. Erin and her colleagues at Buntport graciously opened their doors to The Narrators in 2014 and she joined us as a co-host six months ago. Working with Erin feels like scoring a free dessert at your favorite restaurant, on your birthday, in the company of close friends—without having to endure the “Happy Birthday” song.

Erin’s story was recorded live on 17 June 2015 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado. The theme of the evening was “WTF.” Our theme music is by our friend Whalehawk (aka the Grammy-nominated musician Jake Sanders).

Anthony’s story was recorded live on 20 May 2015 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado. The theme of the evening was “Nature vs. Nurture.” Our theme music is by our friend Whalehawk (aka the Grammy-nominated musician Jake Sanders).
