82: Hannah Duggan, “What are these things?”

Today’s story comes from Hannah Duggan. Hannah is a founding member of Buntport Theater Company, which owns the amazing home of our Denver show. Every time I see her, I regret that we didn’t know each other sooner. Hannah’s story was recorded live on 21 October 2015 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado. The theme of the evening was “Creeps.

Thanks to everyone who joined us at Four Mile Historic Park for the Stompin’ Ground Games. It was really something special. Our next live events—which are our last two shows of 2015—will take place on 8 December in San Diego and 16 December in Denver. The theme will be “Siblings.” Hope to see you there!

Our theme music is by our friend Whalehawk (aka the Grammy-nominated musician Jake Sanders).

    81: Kendall Burdett, “Pretend Lawyer”

Robert steps up on his soap box with a mini rant about what makes a good story and presents this week’s tale, which comes to you from Kendall Burdett, a writer, comedian, and native San Diegan who wears a suit well enough to convince officers of the law that he is an attorney. This story was recorded live on 10 November 2015 at Tiger!Tiger! Tavern in San Diego, California. The theme of the evening was “Bottled Up.”

We’re pleased as pickles to be part of the Stompin’ Ground Games, a monthly neighborhood pride festival put on by our friends at Warm Cookies of the Revolution. Please join us on Saturday, 14 November at Four Mile Historic Park for an afternoon of storytelling (that’s us!), free cookies, activities for adults and families, historians, prizes, folklorico dancers, poets, and an adorable multicultural fashion show featuring kids from the neighborhood. We’d love to see you there. 4PM FREE ($5 suggested donation).

Our next monthly show in Denver is next week on Wednesday, 18 November at 8pm. Join us at Buntport Theater for an evening of stories on the theme “If You Can’t Say Something Nice.”

    Stompin’ Ground Games on Saturday!

    THIS SATURDAY, 14 NOVEMBER 2015:

Your rump is raw from the 3-month journey from Kansas City. Your eldest boy has scabies and your rations of jerky and hard-tack have run thin. An oil lamp in the window of Four-Mile House feels like a beacon, welcoming you to your new home—Denver. Or something like that. Join us tomorrow for a special Stompin’ Ground Games edition of The Narrators. In addition to all the fun activities and presentations, we have assembled an amazing lineup of storytellers on the theme “How We Got Here”:

    • Molina Speaks (MC, poet)
    • Shelly Hines (Jewish Family Service)
    • Addis Sisay (African Community Center)
    • Bhuwani Shankar (Picture. Me. Here.)
    • Rosa Snyder (Community Language Cooperative)
    • Bill Convery (Former Colorado State Historian)

    80: Carolyn Matthews, “False Positive”

Today’s story comes from first-time storyteller Carolyn Matthews. Carolyn hails from the great state of New Jersey, she works for the Boulder International Film Festival and she is captain of the Denver Molly Browns, arguably the best ultimate frisbee team in this city and indisputably the best-named team in this town. This story was recorded live on September 16, 2015 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado. The theme of the evening was “Firsts.”

Thanks to all of you folks outside of Denver and San Diego who have been sending us messages. It’s really cool to know that you exist, so please keep those messages coming.

We have two very special events coming up next week in California and Colorado. In San Diego, please join us on Tuesday, November 10 at Tiger!Tiger! Tavern for a special evening in honor of San Diego Beer Week. The theme will be “Bottled Up” and the show starts at 8pm. The show is free and be sure to ask about all the special beers on tap for the evening. In Denver, join us at 4pm on on Saturday, November 14 at Four Mile Historic Park for the Stompin’ Ground Games, a monthly neighborhood history and pride event created by our pals at Warm Cookies of the Revolution. This month’s event will focus on neighborhoods in southeast Denver and the art of storytelling—there will be activities, prizes, storytellers, dancers and a multicultural fashion show put on by a bunch of adorable elementary school kids. The event is free but donations are encouraged.

As always, please check our Facebook page for the latest information about these and all of our events. Hope to see you there!

    79: Kimberly Dark, “Why I’m Not Sorry…”

Today’s story is from Kimberly Dark, a storyteller, writer, and professor of Sociology. Kimberly’s story was recorded live on 13 October 2015 at Tiger!Tiger! Tavern in San Diego, California. The theme of the evening was “Creeps.”

If you want to read more of Kimberly’s work, check out this fantastic essay just published on Narratively—it’s a great story about planning a vacation with her lesbian partner, her nine-year-old son, and his father.

In other news, our special San Diego Beer Week show is coming up on November 10. We’ve assembled a heady brew of storytellers to tackle the theme “Bottled Up.” Adjust your foil hats to receive transmissions from the great Facebook mothership and stay tuned for more details.
